Meet Audrey Nath, MD, PhD
Hi y'all! I'm a pediatric neurologist and HISD mom running for HISD District 7 Trustee. You might see me chasing my kid as we bike to our neighborhood school in the morning, along with our Chihuahua mix, Rudy.
In my years of education, from college at Rice University, to my MD and PhD in neuroscience from UT-Houston, to residency training in the Harvard hospital system, I have seen how good teaching makes all the difference. I have volunteered my time to mentor high school and college students navigating the rather convoluted path to medicine. I will use my experiences to support our high school students pursuing higher education.
Being a parent has opened my eyes to the needs of students in our district.
After my son was diagnosed with profound dyslexia, I saw firsthand that there are real implications of the state of Texas not fully funding special education services. Within the district, we need to be prioritizing our special education services as well, as wait times for testing within schools can be months or longer. My son has since made great strides in his reading, and I want every student to have the opportunities to learn and thrive that my own child has had.
I am a big fan of fiscal responsibility, both in my own life and with regard to school district finances. For example, instead of spending $470,000 for a play about Mike Miles, we could instead help preserve wraparound services for our most vulnerable students. I have protested the TEA takeover from the beginning, and I am running to return our district to local control and fiscal responsibility.
